  1. I’m curious why Arnold went with a riveted metal skin, as opposed to FRP over metal structure, as he discussed in his paper. In the book, the leaking metal wings caused quite a bit of trouble, which would have been headed off with fiberglass.

    • It was primarily because he wasn’t comfortable working with fiberglass and wasn’t sure if there would be any longer-term issues with fuel interacting with fiberglass. He thought that the sealant he used would work better than it did! And I’m not sure if the problem was the sealant itself or the way he applied it.
